Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in El Cerrito public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Police Surveillance Technology
El Cerrito police are keeping their license plate reader cameras even after a data breach hit the system. If you care about who can see where you drive—or who might get exposed next—this is a local privacy fight worth watching.
Transit-oriented Development
Construction just started on Parcel A at El Cerrito Plaza BART, bringing new housing right next to the station. That means near-term construction noise and traffic, but also a more transit-friendly neighborhood and potentially easier commutes for future residents.
Cybersecurity Ransomware Incident
A ransomware crew says it stole data from El Cerrito’s systems, and the city is investigating whether the breach is real. If confirmed, personal information City Hall holds—like resident or employee data—could be exposed. Watch for city notices and be extra careful with phishing or identity-theft signs.
City Manager Appointment
El Cerrito has a new city manager, the top administrator who runs day-to-day city operations. The change could shift how services and projects are handled, so residents may want to watch for early priorities.
